- The business climate – how confident in their businesses are the leaders of those businesses both large and small?
- Investors – how willing are people to invest in their own business and in other people’s?
- Banks – what is their current attitude to lending? Are they experiencing bad debt problems?
- Property (and rental) values – are these increasing or decreasing? Both give rise to problems and opportunities.
- Inflation – the level of it and its rate relative to the past and to interest rates.
- Interest rates – the level and the perceived direction for the future levels affect everyone although they may not perceive it.
- UITF 40 – changes the way in which service businesses must account for their work, and effectively brings forward the tax charge.
- Staff – how easily or otherwise can businesses find the right staff at an affordable price?
- Taxes on income – income tax and national insurance levels.
- Taxes on capital – capital gains tax and inheritance tax levels.
