Article contributed by Joe Mernagh Get rid of your complicated telephone system and switch on a cheaper, advanced corporate-class system - Voice Over IP for business has finally arrived and getting set up is as easy as picking up the phone! Everyone knows that the traditional telephone system is just about dead, however moving to a Voice Over IP telephone system is complicated and has poor call quality, isn't it? Not any longer - corporate-class VOIP solutions are available that require no on-site infrastructure, are crystal clear and provide advanced multi-site and remote-working features. They are quick and easy to deploy whether you need ten handsets or ten thousand. The payback period is immediate and is equally valid whether or not you already have a corporate telephone system. Traditional Telephone System A traditional telephone system consists of digital or analogue handsets connected via dedicated internal wiring to a PABX telephone switch, which itself is connected to the outside world via ISDN or analogue trunk lines. The PABX system contains several sub-systems to enable the different lines and trucks, consoles, answer phone, call routing etc Even a relatively small system is sufficiently complicated to require specialist skills and maintenance contracts. Anyone who doubts this should ask their technical people to explain in simple terms how their telephone calls get in and out. Then ask them what can go wrong … Hosted VOIP Telephone System A hosted VOIP telephone system looks and feels the same to an end user. You get the normal handsets, headsets, mobiles and faxes. You also get lots of advanced options for transparent call routing, multi-site and remote working, voicemail and email integration that normally only come with very sophisticated (and expensive) systems. The difference is in the back office where the complicated PABX, sub-systems and trunk infrastructure is replaced by … well, by very little. Small deployments can use existing data connections. Larger deployments simply require larger data connections. That's it. Where's the catch? There really isn't one. A typical company can expect to save 25-30% annual costs of running their telephone system. The savings are potentially greater for multi-site environments or remote locations. Deployment really is simple because there is virtually nothing to deploy. Porting numbers and/or connecting with existing PABX systems for larger, phased rollouts is not a problem. Getting a service up and running is almost immediate - try asking that of a conventional supplier. This is a technology that has arrived and, believe me, this is going to kill the traditional telephone system. What's next?
